SUMMARY

A Sunny Morning by Serafin and Joaquin Alverez Quintero

On a sunny morning in autumn weather, in a retired corner of a park in Madrid, Dona Laura, a handsome white-haired old lady of about seventy, refined in appearance, having bright eyes and good manners, enters with her maid Petra. She has carried a parasol in her hand to use as a cane.

Dona Laura sits down on the bench at right and sends Petra to chat with her lover, the guard of the park. Petra hands her a small bag of bread crumbs. After Petra's departure, Dona Laura throws handfuls of breadcrumbs and feeds the pigeons. She is pleased with the sight of moving pigeons. Meanwhile, Don Gonzalo, an old gentleman of seventy, gouty, and impatient, enters with his man Juanito. Juanito refers him to the bench, where Laura is sitting alone. Irritably, Gonzalo asks if he will sit on his own bench, though there are already three priests sitting. He asks him to rout them out. Helplessly, he walks past the lady, scaring away the birds. She shouts at him. He wonders at her liberty to address him even without any introduction. Laura sees him again walking back to her bench, wiping the perspiration from his face. He is raising dust with his feet.

Gonzalo sits at the extreme end of Dona Loura's bench and looks at her indignantly. He greets her good morning. Instead of a reply, she asks him why he was again there at her bench. He grumbles at her, saying that she ought to be at home knitting and counting her beads. Laura is not ready to surrender easily. Gonzalo brushes his shoes with his handkerchief. She criticises him, asking if he uses a shoe brush as a handkerchief. Also, she says that she has been criticised as a neighbour.

Gonzalo takes a book from Juanito, puts on his glasses, sets a reading glass on it, and opens the book to read. For Laura, that seems like a telescope. Both start arguing about keener eyesight. Gonzalo says that he has a keener sight. He says that he can show a boar's head in his study. Clearly, Laura is cleverer to say that she can show a tiger's skin in her bedroom. But that does not prove Keener's eyesight. Being unable to persuade her. He takes out his snuffbox and offers some to her. Both of them have the habit of sneezing. He reads some sentences from the book, and Laura sighs. She says that she can read a book even without glasses. Taking the book, she reads out a poem. Aside from that, she is quite pleased because she knows every word by heart. Really, she does not read. Gonzalo says that he was fond of verses. He composed several good poems in his youth. He also says that he was a great friend of Espronceda, Zorrilla, Becquer, and others. He had travelled to America, too. He introduces himself as a native of Valencia. Laura says that she had lived in Maricela, Valencia, for several seasons. Gonzalo startles at the information. Gonzalo explains that he knows well that there lived the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. This time, Laura startles.

Now she deceives him, pretending that she knows Laura Llorente because she was her friend. Gonzalo highly praises the woman. The woman was called "The Silver Maiden." She sat at the window with the red roses. Laura is quite amused at the truth that it was she. Gonzalo also pretends that he heard them from his cousin, the gallant lover of hers. The lover passed by on horseback every morning down the rose path under the window and tossed up to her balcony a bouquet, which she caught. Later in the afternoon, the gallant horseman would return by the same path and catch the bouquet she would toss him. Her parents wanted to marry her to a rich local merchant. She did not like him. Gonzalo and the merchant had a duel. Gonzalo injured the merchant, and so he concealed himself.

Both of them suspect each other. She knows that he is Gonzalo. He also knows that she is Laura. Gonzalo narrates to her that the young man came to take refuge in his house. The man went to Seville, then came to Madrid. After having no answer from Laura in despair, he went to Africa. He fought in the trenches and died grasping the flag of Spain and whispering the name of his beloved Laura.

Laura also makes a story and says that the woman Laura also waited for many years, and when no letters came, she left the house. She sat on a rock on the beach. The high tide rose and swept her out to sea. She had written the name of Gonzalo in the sand. That was also washed away.

Aside from that, Laura thinks that she will not tell him that she got married two years later. Gonzalo also thinks that he also ran off to Paris with a ballet dancer. It is a very curious fate that both pretend to be talking about friends, though they know each other now. They promise each other to come the following morning, too. Laura calls her maid Petra. While Laura walks away, she drops some violets. Gonzalo stoops to pick them up. Laura is surprised. They have recognised each other. They wave farewell.
