The importance of cottage industries in Nepal
By cottage or household industry, we mean a type of small-scale industry in which the products are manufactured manually by the artisans.
Cottage industries produce many things locally for us that we need in our daily lives. The artisans produce a variety of things, such as candles, matches, furniture, pots, baskets, etc. In cottage industries, the artisans use locally available raw materials to manufacture varieties of household items as well as other usable products. Cottage industries also provide job opportunities for the youth of the country. There are small and large-scale industries in the country. Among these, all the small-scale industries are called cottage industries. In our country, Nepal, we can find many cottage industries. These small-scale industries are more important than large-scale industries. Cottage industries have played a very vital role in the development of our country. These industries are very important for developing countries, as they need less manpower and capital. These industries can easily run with less investment. Cottage industries include areas of domestic activities like weaving clothes, garments, carpets, pottery, carving, making bamboo baskets, utensils, shoes, etc. These industries help preserve traditional arts and crafts.
Cottage industries are very helpful for Nepalese people, as they help to improve the economic condition of the people and increase the national economy. When people become economically strong, their social condition will improve, and they will feel secure and prosperous in society. We can earn foreign currency by selling the goods produced by cottage industries. More than 80 percent of people in Nepal are farmers, and they engage in farming seasonally. They don't get work for the whole year. They have to stay idle in the off-season. So, during that time, they can earn money from cottage industries by applying their various skills.
In the context of Nepal, cottage industries are very important. The government of Nepal should take some positive steps to promote these industries.
It should promote the concept of cottage industries in many places in Nepal by providing loans and other facilities to the people for establishing new cottage industries and sustaining the existing ones. People who are involved in cottage industries should be given training to improve their occupation.
The government should also help the farmers financially by increasing the availability of raw materials to run such industries.
