How to write the Story?

STORY WRITING

Storywriting is the oldest form of written composition. It is a very good art that can be learned only through practice. However, to write a good story, the following points should be kept in mind:

Plot

The plot is the soul of the story. Therefore, before starting to write the story, a clear, cut idea of the plot must be imagined in your mind.

Logical Movement of Events

In the story, the events must move in a logical order. All unnecessary details should be avoided, but the details that are essential to the story should not be excluded.

Clarity

The story should be written in such a way that the movement of events is clearly understandable even to a child. There is more scope for suggestiveness, ambiguity, or circumlocution in storywriting.

Dialogue

Conversation or dialogue may be introduced naturally if desired.

Consistency

There should be consistency, especially in characterization. The characters should not sound illogical and whimsical.

Conclusion

The conclusion is perhaps the most important of all. An unexpected ending will help to make the story striking and memorable.

Title

The heading or title, if required, should be carefully chosen. You may name it after the chief point, character, or incident. Or you may choose a proverb, quotation, or some well-known maxim that the story illustrates.

Outline:

If an outline is given, you should stick to the incidents and their sequence given in the outline. No point should be left out.

Some important hints for you to write a story

1. You must have a very clear idea of the plot of the story before you begin to write it. Plan the whole story at first. Jot down the main points. Arrange them in a sequence of paragraphs. Be clear about the beginning part, the middle part, the details, and the ending part of the story.

2. Without beating about the bush, start your story. If there is a long introduction, it may spoil the charm of the story.

3. Develop the story event-wise. The various parts of the story should be neither too long nor too short. Do not put in irrelevant details in any part. The flow of the story should not be hindered. Avoid everything that either hinders the flow of the story or does not help it move forward.

4. By using different kinds of words and sentences, bring in variety. The sentences may be either long or short.

Points to remember

1. Read the outline carefully and try to understand what it is all about.

2. Have a clear and definite idea of the plot of the story.

3. The dialogue of the story may be introduced where possible.

4. The beginning should be natural and striking, and so should the end.

5. Use simple and correct language.

6. Write a suitable title for the story.

7. A moral (lesson) to a story should be added in case we are asked to do it.

8. Use past tense even if the outlines have been present tense.

9. Make sentences for every point or clue given by adding the necessary words.

10. Remember that completing a story is not simply filling up the gap. It is more than that. So we should write additional things as required to make the story natural and interesting.
