The modern age is the age of science and technology. Modern science and technology have given us a variety of gifts. Among them, the computer is one of the most wonderful gifts. The computer is an electronic calculating machine. It is more accurately defined as a machine that stores information, data, etc. on magnetic tapes. We can ask the computers to analyse the dates, and we can retrieve them whenever we require. It works more or less like human brains, but more quickly. Computers are very accurate since they perform tasks using mathematical operations.
In the beginning, it was simply a calculating machine doing addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, etc. But now it helps in so many ways. The use of computers is in every field of life. It has entered almost all our activities. They have occupied an important place in schools and the education system as well. They are also used in trading, missile and rocket launching, automatic flights, data analysis, forecasting, etc. We have heard about e-mail and the Internet. This is the networking of computers all over the world. We can send our messages or letters within a minute to any part of the world, which would otherwise take weeks or months. Its networking has reduced distances. It can also be used to coordinate activities in different places in a country or around the world. It also helps us in educational institutions to check on the progress of students and their learning. Computerization has proved very beneficial in terms of cost, time, energy, and efficiency. When using computers, we have to feed them with data and programmes. Then it gives us the answers and information required.
Computers are versatile because they can do one or more types of work at the same time. Computers have an enormous storage capacity for information. They can be stored on a small device. Since computers perform all sorts of tasks based on numeric calculations and have no errors in mathematical and logical operations, they are most reliable. In developed countries, many heavy electronic computers have been discovered. They will control transport, trade, elections, and security arrangements. We are thankful that computers have modified our lives. Let us look forward to the revolution the computer will bring to our lives.
Advantages and disadvantages of computers
Computers have become a part of our lives. They have been used widely in every field. It is one of the most useful inventions in science and technology. Computers are used in private and government offices, airlines, banks, hotels, schools, colleges, business organisations, industries, factories, agriculture, medicine, communication, etc. It is also used for personal work. They are used to keeping records for a long time. They are the source of information. They are the source of knowledge. We can learn many things by using them. The computer has been introduced as a new method of calculation or to do mathematical operations. Now, the computer has become a very powerful device in the field of data processing and research. Although it looks small, it does a lot more work.
The computer is also a source of entertainment. We can play different types of games on the computer. When we feel bored, we can watch a film too. It is also the fastest means of communication. We can send our message via email. We can talk to other people with the help of the Internet.
Computers have become the most essential, even in developing countries like Nepal. Now we cannot imagine the world without computers.
There are also some disadvantages to computers. Since the invention of the computer, people have fully depended on it. It has made them lazy and inactive. They use computers even for small work. It has created the problem of unemployment. As computers can work fast and efficiently, many people have lost their work. It is said that a computer can do the work of twenty people. We know that unemployment creates social problems.
