Dashain Festival | Festival I Like Most

                Dashain Festival

Dashain is the greatest festival for Hindus. In Nepal, it is very popular and celebrated more heartily. Dashain is also known as Durga Puja. During this festival, the goddess Durga is worshipped. The puja generally falls in Ashwin and sometimes in Kartik as well.

Dashain begins with Ghatasthapana. There are nine days, worshipped as Navaratri. Lots of animals and birds are given sacrifices. Dashain is the tenth day since Ghastashthapana. This day is also called 'Tika'

There are different beliefs regarding why Dashain is celebrated. However, the most popular belief is that it is a celebration of victory. Rama had killed Ravana on this day. This is the celebration of victory over evil.

On the occasion of this great puja, schools, colleges, and all government offices are closed for a fortnight. The joy of children knows no bounds. They put on new clothes. Those who live abroad come home at this time of celebration. This is the time for a family reunion. We all enjoy going to relatives' homes and meeting them. It is a very happy time for all. Children pass the time merrily.

In Nepal, all ethnic groups enjoy this festival with great vigour. They all put tika on their foreheads and go to their elders for blessings. Since the commencement of democracy in Nepal, some selfish politicians have made this festival a political issue. This great festival had been eagerly celebrated by all citizens of the country, regardless of caste and ethnicity. Some politicians say that Dashain is the festival of only certain castes. In my view, if any festival brings unity and cheerfulness to all, it should not be anyone's private property.

We understand that the festival not only brings joy to our lives but also has a unifying force. It makes all of us united. Instead of making the festival a bone of contention, it should be enjoyed together. There is nothing to be lost if all of us celebrate all the festivals with respect.

SHORT ESSAY ON

Dashain Festival

Dashain is the greatest festival in Nepal. It is celebrated by all Hindus throughout the country. It generally falls in the month of Ashwin (Sept–Oct). We see all things neat and clean on this occasion. Houses are coloured with paint. People eat delicious food, especially meat. People wear new dresses. They come to their houses from faraway places. All the schools, campuses, offices, and institutions remain closed. People forget their sorrows and celebrate them with great joy and happiness. Even the poor take loans from the rich and celebrate them happily. People take a rest from their busy lives.

The first day of this festival is known as 'Ghatasthapana'. On this day, maize and paddy are planted, which is called 'Jamara'. People worship Goddess Durga for nine days. On the seventh, eighth, and ninth days, they offer animals' sacrifices to the goddess Durga. The tenth day is the main day of this festival. This day is called 'Vijaya Dashami'. This day is the symbol of the victory of gods over demons.

On this very day, elders put 'Tika' on their foreheads and also offer blessings. People feed their near and dear ones. This is a time to show goodwill. All people wish "Happy Vijaya Dashami" to friends and relatives. They believe that this festival is a source of peace and prosperity for all Hindus.
