The Wolf and The Heron
This short story, The Wolf and the Heron, is quite an interesting story for all. Enjoy reading this story.
Once upon a time, a lazy wolf lived in a jungle. There was a pond near his house. Many animals from that jungle came to the pond to drink water. The wolf also spent his time near the pond in search of food.
Once, while he was sitting near the pond in the hope of getting something to eat, he spotted a large dead fish floating in the water. "Wow! What a luck! Now I can eat all I want," he thought, and his mouth started watering.
He moved towards the dead fish and took it. He hurriedly started to eat it as soon as he came out of the pond. A thought stopped him: "If another beast comes this way, he will ask for a share. I had better eat fast." 'Grub! Grub! Grub! Grub' he chewed, faster and faster.
In a haste, a piece of bone got stuck in his throat. "Ohh!" cried the wolf bitterly. He tried his best to take it out of his mouth, but couldn't. He coughed many times to take it out, but in vain. Next, he tried to swallow the bone down, but he failed this time too.
"Oh! The bone in my throat hurts. What shall I do now?" thought the wolf in pain. Suddenly, he remembered about a heron who lived on the nearby pond bank next to him.
The wolf rushed to the heron and pleaded, "My dear heron! I have a bone stuck in my throat. I will give you a big reward if you pull it out of my throat with your long beak."
The heron took pity on the wolf's condition. He asked him to look up with his mouth open. The heron put its head into the wolf's mouth and pulled out the bone quite carefully. "Oh! What a relief!" the wolf sighed happily.
The wolf thanked the heron and started moving away. "Where is my reward?" asked the heron. "What reward?" the wolf asked, pretending not to be aware of its promise.
"You said that you would give me a big reward if I removed the fish bone from your throat," replied the heron humbly.
"Ha! Is it not a reward that you put your head into my mouth and got out alive? I could have crushed your head easily while your beak was inside my mouth," said the ungrateful wolf, moving away.
The heron felt so bad to hear the wolf's words and decided not to help any ungrateful creature in the future.
Moral: We should be aware of cheaters.
