MAIN SUMMARY

How to Live Before You Die by Steve Jobs

There were three different stories from the life of Steve Jobs, the CEO and co-founder of Apple Computer and Pixar:

1. About Connecting the Dots:

2. About Love and Loss:

3. About Death:

This first story is about various facts related to his life. In the first story, he describes his birth, the scene of his adoption, and the struggles that followed. According to him, his biological mother was an unmarried college graduate student who decided to adopt him before he was born. She wanted her child to be adopted by graduate parents. A lawyer and his wife first agreed to adopt him. But, after his birth, the lawyer's family changed their mind about adopting him, as they wanted to adopt a baby girl. He was later adopted by another family. His biological mother refused to sign the adoption papers because she learned that the parents had never graduated from high school or college. But the parents convinced his biological mother to send him to college someday.

At the age of 17, Steve joined an expensive college named Reed College. All his parents' savings were being spent on his college tuition. After six months, he dropped out of Reed College and even those classes that didn't interest him. He had no idea about the next steps of his life. He failed to make sense of his life. He had no idea what he wanted to do with his life. For him, the importance of the college itself was in question. Later, he started taking classes that piqued his interest. He had to face a lot of difficulties in those days. He attended a calligraphy class to learn about typefaces. Calligraphy was very popular in those days. He learned serif and sans-serif typefaces. The calligraphy course proved to be a boon for him. After 10 years, he used all his knowledge of calligraphy and his skills when he was designing the first Macintosh computer.

He designed the first Macintosh computer with very beautiful typography. Chasing his curiosity and intuition, he stumbled several times, but later, his hardships turned out to be priceless. He felt everything in his life was connected to the dots and their connections. When he looked back, he could see how different points kept joining together to support him in reaching his true destination. His decision to leave college and start the course of his interest, his experiences, difficulties, gut, and belief in karma (destiny), etc. proceeded with his steps like various dots. In the end, all these dots added up and made him a success.

His advice in this story:

☆  You can connect the dots while looking backwards.

☆  You have to rely on the connection of the dots in your future.

☆  You have to trust your gut, luck, life, and karma.

His Second Story about Love and Loss:

In this story, he narrates his love for his work and the loss of his company. According to him, he got everything he loved in his life quickly. He and his friend Woz started the Apple company at the age of 20 in their parent's garage. Their small company became a $2 billion company 10 years later, with over 4,000 employees. As the company progressed, both of them decided to hire a talented person to take over the company. The company did quite well in its first year. But later, due to differences in his vision for the future of his company, the board of directors fired him from his own company at the age of 30.

It was a devastating experience for him. He also apologised to David Packard and Bob Noyce for screwing up so badly with them. He thought as if his whole life was ruined. He felt rejected but began to realise that he still loved his work. He decided to start all over again. After that, he entered and engaged himself in one of the most creative periods of his life. During the next five years, he formed and ran a new company called NeXt, and then Pixar, which turned out to be the world's most successful animation studio, produced the first computer-animated feature film, Toy Story. He also fell in love with a wonderful woman.

Later, Apple bought NeXT, and he returned and joined Apple again. Later on, with a mixed-technology vision, he was able to dominate the IT market.

His advice in this story:

Don't lose faith.

I love the work you do.

☆  Keep looking for the best work that satisfies you; don't settle or compromise.

His Third Story about Death:

Here in this story, Steve narrates his story about death. At the age of 49, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. His doctors told him that he would only live for 3 to 6 months. But later, when he had a biopsy, his doctors informed his wife about the treatment of his tumour through surgery. After surgery, he was able to get rid of his pancreatic tumour. During his diagnosis, he experienced his death quite close. The concept of death taught him quite a serious lesson in his life. Death is inevitable, and no one lasts forever. No one wants to die, but everyone shares this intellectual concept. Death is indeed the greatest invention of life. It is the changing agent of life. It clears out the old to make way for the new. But he never lost hope. After his recovery, he continued to work very sincerely, giving his best to be responsible for his company.

His advice in this story:

☆  Don't get bogged down in dogma—living with the consequences of what other people think.

Listen to your conscience rather than the opinions of others.

Follow your heart and intuition.

☆  Stay hungry. Stay Foolish.
