What I Require from Life by John Burdon Sanderson Haldane
This personal essay, "What I Require from Life," is written by British-Indian scientist John Burdon Sanderson Haldane. The essay was first published in the newspaper "The Daily Worker" in the year 1940. This essay covers various political and philosophical ideas related to the requirements of the lives of the people. It has focused primarily on socialist beliefs seeking democratic activity in workplaces. This essay presents the various needs of working-class people who are living their lives in different conditions and working to survive properly. In this essay, the author has used very simple and clear language in his writing style to discuss his requirements and experiences in life. His requirements in life are similar to those of most working-class people in the world.

What I Require from Life by John Burdon Sanderson Haldane
The writer begins with his thoughts concerning his acceptance of the concept of the world as it is. According to him, he must not require such things in his life that are impossible to achieve. He says that if he tries to imagine perfect beings in a perfect world, he will harm others instead of doing good.
According to the writer, he was born in a peaceful era. During his youth, he wanted to live his life in peace, but due to the devastating outbreak of World War I in 1914, he found himself involved in his heroic era. The devastating First World War changed his concept of living in peace. In the dire situation he was living in, he wanted to make the most of his time through necessities like food, water, clothing, and shelter.
In this essay, the writer has talked about four common human needs that are quite important. The four common requirements that the writer and others require are as follows:
1. Work:
The writer requires work with a good salary, which is very important for everyone. He considers himself lucky to have chosen his desired job to a large extent. He says that in addition to his scientific work, he could easily become a war correspondent, write children's stories, or give political speeches.
2. Freedom:
Subsequently, the author requires freedom in his work. Freedom is necessary for everyone. The writer gives the highest priority to freedom of expression or speech. He wants to say and write about various toxic aspects, but the law of libel prevents him from doing so.
3. Good health:
Next, the writer requires healthy health to function in his life. Good health enables people to get everything they need in their lives. Good health provides happiness and success in life.
4. Friendship:
Next, the writer needs the friendship of his colleagues and peers. He prefers equality in a society where criticism can be freely given. His friendship should be far from the concept of obedience and order without criticism. One should make friends with people on the same level.
Apart from all these basic needs, the writer demands various things in his life. He demands adventure in his life, although adventure has risks. According to him, the satisfaction of adventure is more solid than the thrill. He wants to keep some books in his room, a motor car, a daily bath, a beach, or a river within easy reach. He desires all these things but does not demand them.
The writer considers himself lucky to enjoy his essential requirements, but if his friends do not find happiness in these requirements, his enjoyment seems useless. He wants to see the healthiest people on the planet at work. All workers at work should be rewarded according to their capacity. They should work hard for their own benefit as well as the well-being of their friends, but not for the benefit of others.
The writer wants to see the workers in control of their working conditions. As a socialist, he wants to see a situation where workers play their important roles and control the industry. He wants to see an end to class subjugation and sexual subjugation. There is a need for equality among people to achieve fraternity. There must be an economic revolution to end class subjection and sexual subjection.
The writer likes to die happily to see capitalism overthrown and workers in power in most of Europe. He wants to see an end to fascism, which led to the outbreak of the First World War and a breach of the peace.
The writer wants to see the spread of education and the application of scientific methods in all branches of life. In the end, he wants to die if he can achieve only two conditions of Aristotle's death.
