SHORT SUMMARY

The Landlady by Roald Dahl

The story begins with the main character Billy. We find him on his journey. He moved to a new city in search of work. It was quite late in the evening when he arrived in town. Later, he searched for a place to stay. While he was walking through the quiet streets, he saw a cosy and attractive house with a sign reading "Bed and Breakfast".

Billy was quite tired and curious about the house. He planned to check in. The landlady of the house was a kind and friendly woman. She welcomed Billy warmly. The house of the lady was charming and full of fine decorations. For Billy, everything seemed just right there. The landlady informed Billy about other two guests, Mr. Temple and Mr. Mulholland, who were also staying in the same house.

During the conversation with the landlady, Billy noticed some strange things. For him, those names Mr. Temple and Mr. Mulholland were familiar. He had heard these names before. He realised that he had seen them in the newspaper before. However, he took this strange thing to be just a coincidence and ignored it.

The landlady asked Billy to sign the guest book. As he read the guest book, he noticed that the last entry by a guest was made two years ago. It seemed quite odd to him, but he didn't dwell on it for long. The landlady told Billy that he was her only guest now.

In the evening, the landlady provided Billy with tea. After drinking that tea, he began to feel a little strange. He started feeling dull and began to question the reality around him. Despite all these feelings, he decided to trust the landlady and stayed the night there.

The next morning, Billy noticed a strange detail about the two guests, Mr. Temple and Mr. Mulholland. Both of them were still in the same position as they were in the night before. It became clear that something was not quite right. The suspense in the story started.

As Billy's anxiety increased, he decided to leave the the house. However, the landlady insisted him to stay a little longer. In a moment of realisation, Billy noticed some strange things in the house. He also saw a parrot that looked frozen. He began to piece together the strange events and got idea that Mr. Temple and Mr. Mulholland were not actuallt the guests in the house but the victims of the landlady.

In a shocking twist, it became clear that the landlady had an evil habit of preserving her guests in a taxidermy-like manner. The tea which she served contained a substance that paralysed them, and she kept their bodies as if they were still alive. Being horrified by this revelation, Billy got clear idea that he was in grave danger.

In this way, the story ends with a shocking revelation of Billy's fate. It gives readers a chilling realization of the dark secrets hidden behind the bed and breakfast's seemingly pleasant exterior.

The story "The Landlady" is a kind of cautionary tale. It teaches us about the importance of being alert as well as observant even in seemingly harmless situations.

Here, Dahl has quite skillfully weaved mystery and wonder into the narrative. His style has made this story quite engaging and thought-provoking for all his young audiences.
