This short story "There Will Come Soft Rains" is a science fiction story by American writer Ray Bradbury, published in 1950. The main ideas in the story include entropy, the strengths and weaknesses of technology, and the struggle between humanity and nature.

MAIN SUMMARY

There Will Come Soft Rains by Ray Bradbury

The story begins at 7 o'clock in the morning, with an alarm clock making a sound in an empty house. A brief description of the kitchen, where cooking appears to be happening on its own, is described, indicating a futuristic setting. An automated voice from the kitchen ceiling declares that it's the 4th of August in the year 2026 and goes on to list important events on that date. Then it provides a list of things to do, including when the people in the house should leave for school and work. Strangely, there's complete silence. The eggs set for breakfast dry up, the food is left untouched, and the advanced machines in the house automatically get rid of it. Outside, it's raining, and a weather box softly sings a tune related to clearing the rain.

At 9:15, the house said it's time to clean, and little robot mice handled the whole process. By 10, the sun is shining, and the house stands alone in a pile of debris. It's the only house left after a nuclear bomb, but its residents didn't make it out alive. The house was wrecked and burned, with only five shapes left: the mom, dad, two kids, and a ball. The house is watchful, always asking for a password if an animal comes close, and it shuts down if something gets too near.

At lunchtime, the family's dog whines, and the house recognises it, letting it in. The dog, seeing the empty house, discovers the family is gone. The house cooks pancakes, making the dog excited, but sadly, it exhausts itself and dies. The house keeps going as if the family is there—arranging tables, cards, and martinis, setting up a colourful nursery, filling the bathtub, and preparing for dinner. At night, it asks Mrs. McClellan which poem she wants to hear, but in the quiet, it chooses one of its own and recites Sarah Teasdale's poem.

At 10 p.m., the house starts to die in a fire, and it can't save itself. The fire goes to the attic, causing an explosion. The house falls apart with other ruins, leaving only one wall. The next day, the automated voice keeps saying the date: "Today is August 5th, 2026," despite the destruction.
